🌎 Terraria Events: Essential Guide
1. What counts as an event?
An event is a temporary gameplay occurrence that changes normal conditions.
Events can:
- Increase enemy spawn rates
- Introduce exclusive enemies
- Introduce exclusive items
- Change the background, lighting, or music
- Affect NPC behavior
- Create special progression opportunities
- Be triggered randomly
- Be triggered with a special item
- Require particular world/progression conditions
Some are essentially weather phenomena, while others are full-on invasions where enemies attack your world.
🌦️ 2. Weather events
These aren't traditional invasions, but they're still classified as events.
🌧️ Rain
How it happens
Occurs randomly.
What it does
Rain affects surface biomes and can last anywhere from several in-game hours to several in-game days.
In the Snow biome, rain becomes a Blizzard.
It also:
- Increases cloud cover
- Gives +20% Fishing Power
- Causes Waterleaf to bloom
- Makes worms spawn more frequently in Forests
- Causes NPCs to remain inside as though it were nighttime
Special enemies can appear during Rain, including Flying Fish, Umbrella Slimes, and Raincoat Zombies. Hardmode adds enemies such as Angry Nimbus and Rainbow Slime.
Blizzard
A Blizzard is essentially Rain occurring in a Snow biome.
It can additionally produce:
- Deerclops, rarely before/around the appropriate conditions
- Ice Golems during Hardmode
🌪️ 3. Sandstorm
A Sandstorm is restricted to the Desert.
It occurs when wind speed is above 30 mph.
All Deserts experience the Sandstorm simultaneously.
Effects
- Heavy blowing sand
- Reduced visibility
- Strong wind
- Mighty Wind continuously affects the player
Pre-Hardmode enemies
- Angry Tumbler
- Antlion Charger
- Antlion Swarmer
Hardmode enemies
- Sand Elemental
- Dune Splicer
- Sand Shark
- Crystal Thresher in Hallowed Deserts
- Bone Biter in Corrupt Deserts
- Flesh Reaver in Crimson Deserts
The exact enemy pool depends on the type of Desert you're in.
🌬️ 4. Windy Day
A Windy Day randomly increases wind strength and cloud cover.
It introduces special Forest enemies such as:
- Windy Balloon
- Angry Dandelion
If Windy Day occurs simultaneously with Rain:
⛈️ Thunderstorm
⛈️ 5. Thunderstorm
A Thunderstorm is the combination of:
Rain + Windy Day
It produces:
- Stronger wind
- Dimmer lighting
- More intense weather effects
- Lightning strikes
Lightning can strike:
and can damage both players and enemies.
All normal Rain effects continue during a Thunderstorm.
⭐ 6. Starfall
Starfall occurs randomly at night.
It dramatically increases the appearance of Fallen Stars.
It also causes Enchanted Nightcrawlers to spawn, making it useful for obtaining bait.
It's primarily an exploration/resource event rather than a hostile invasion.
🟢 7. Slime Rain
Slime Rain is a special Pre-Hardmode event.
It can occur once the player has:
- More than 140 health
- At least 8 defense
Expert Mode has different requirements/chances.
What happens?
Slimes continually fall from the sky.
Common event enemies include:
- Blue Slime
- Green Slime
- Purple Slime
- Pinky
The major objective is killing slimes.
King Slime
If you kill:
150 slimes
King Slime can spawn.
After King Slime has previously been defeated, only:
75 slimes
are required.
Once King Slime is defeated during Slime Rain, the event immediately ends.
🩸 8. Blood Moon
The Blood Moon is one of Terraria's most important random events.
It occurs at night and dramatically changes nighttime gameplay.
Major effects
- More enemies
- Special Blood Moon enemies
- Certain enemies gain increased spawning
- Some NPCs receive special dialogue/shop behavior
- Fishing becomes dangerous because special enemies can be caught
It is essentially:
Nighttime, but the game has decided you're having too much fun.
In Hardmode, Blood Moons become considerably more dangerous because additional enemies and fishing encounters become available.
👹 9. Goblin Army
The Goblin Army is an invasion event.
Its purpose is to attack the player's world with waves of goblins.
The event features enemies such as:
- Goblin Peons
- Goblin Thieves
- Goblin Warriors
- Goblin Sorcerers
- Goblin Archers
- Goblin Summoners in appropriate progression
The event is completed by defeating enough invading goblins.
Why it matters
The Goblin Army is especially important because completing it enables the Goblin Tinkerer to appear underground.
That NPC is extremely important for:
- Reforging
- Accessory combination
- The Tinkerer's Workshop
So this event is both a combat event and a major progression gateway.
🎄 10. Frost Legion
The Frost Legion is a Christmas-themed invasion.
It functions similarly to the Goblin Army, but the invading enemies are snow-themed.
Its major purpose is obtaining Christmas-themed items and the Snow Globe-related progression associated with the invasion.
It's mostly a cosmetic/collection-oriented event compared with the more progression-heavy invasions.
🏴☠️ 11. Pirate Invasion
The Pirate Invasion is a Hardmode invasion.
Pirates attack the world in waves.
Enemies include various pirate-themed enemies, with stronger enemies appearing as the invasion progresses.
The event has its own exclusive drops and is particularly notable for introducing the:
Pirate NPC
after the invasion has been defeated and the appropriate conditions are met.
The Pirate can then move into suitable housing.
☀️ 12. Solar Eclipse
The Solar Eclipse is a major Hardmode event.
It occurs during the daytime but replaces normal daytime enemy spawning with much more dangerous enemies.
The sky darkens dramatically, and numerous unique enemies appear.
Important enemies include:
- Frankenstein
- Swamp Thing
- Creature from the Deep
- Mothron
- Deadly Sphere
- Nailhead
- Psycho
The event also introduces many unique drops.
Mothron
Mothron is one of the most notable Solar Eclipse enemies.
Its appearance and drops are tied to progression conditions involving the Mechanical Bosses.
👽 13. Martian Madness
Martian Madness is a Hardmode alien invasion.
Unlike ordinary invasions, it begins through a special triggering process involving a Martian Probe.
The event features alien enemies and progressively stronger encounters.
Major enemies include:
- Martian Walker
- Martian Drone
- Martian Engineer
- Gigazapper
- Scutlix
- Martian Saucer
Martian Saucer
This is the event's major miniboss-style enemy.
Martian Madness provides several highly valuable unique items and is one of the most important post-Golem events.
🎃 14. Pumpkin Moon
Pumpkin Moon is a Hardmode wave-based event.
It takes place at night and progresses through increasingly difficult waves.
The event features Halloween-themed enemies.
Major enemies include:
Mourning Wood
A large tree-like enemy.
Pumpking
A major flying enemy.
The event becomes increasingly difficult as the night progresses.
Unlike ordinary invasions, Pumpkin Moon emphasizes:
How far can you progress through the waves before dawn?
❄️ 15. Frost Moon
Frost Moon is the winter counterpart to Pumpkin Moon.
It's another wave-based Hardmode event.
Major enemies include:
- Everscream
- Santa-NK1
- Ice Queen
The Ice Queen is the event's particularly dangerous flying enemy.
Frost Moon is generally regarded as one of the hardest events in the game.
Its later waves become absolutely ridiculous.
🏰 16. Old One's Army
The Old One's Army is a tower-defense-style event.
This one is mechanically different from ordinary invasions.
You must defend:
🟣 The Eternia Crystal
The Crystal sits on a special stand while enemies attack from both sides.
You have to protect it until the event is completed.
Three tiers
Old One's Army has:
Tier 1
Pre-Mechanical-Boss progression.
Tier 2
After defeating the Mechanical Bosses.
Tier 3
After defeating Golem.
Each tier introduces stronger enemies and different difficulty scaling.
The event is associated with the Tavernkeep, sentry-focused equipment, and Eternia Crystal mechanics.
It's basically Terraria briefly turning into a tower-defense game because apparently one genre wasn't enough.
🌙 17. Lunar Events
These are the final major progression events.
They begin after defeating:
🧙 Lunatic Cultist
Four Celestial Pillars appear:
☀️ Solar Pillar
Melee-oriented progression.
🌌 Nebula Pillar
Magic-oriented progression.
🌪️ Vortex Pillar
Ranged-oriented progression.
⭐ Stardust Pillar
Summoner-oriented progression.
Each pillar has its own:
- Enemies
- Background
- Music
- Mechanics
- Fragments
☀️ Solar Pillar
The Solar Pillar is associated primarily with melee progression.
Its enemies are generally aggressive and close-range oriented.
Defeating it contributes toward the final confrontation with the Moon Lord.
🌌 Nebula Pillar
Nebula focuses heavily on magic-oriented enemies.
Its enemies can produce dangerous projectiles and effects.
It drops:
Nebula Fragments
which are used for powerful late-game equipment.
🌪️ Vortex Pillar
Vortex focuses heavily on ranged combat.
It introduces several alien-style enemies and drops:
Vortex Fragments
⭐ Stardust Pillar
Stardust focuses heavily on summoning.
It drops:
Stardust Fragments
and has enemies associated with minions and summoned creatures.
🌕 18. Moon Lord
Technically, the Moon Lord isn't itself an event.
He's the boss that appears after the Lunar Events have been completed.
The usual progression is:
Lunatic Cultist
↓
Celestial Pillars
↓
Solar
Vortex
Nebula
Stardust
↓
Moon Lord
So the Lunar Events form the final major event sequence of a standard Terraria playthrough.
🎉 19. Seasonal events
Terraria also has seasonal/holiday content.
These can include things associated with:
- Halloween
- Christmas
- Other special seasonal periods
Some seasonal mechanics affect enemies, drops, costumes, backgrounds, and NPC inventories.
The important distinction is that seasonal events aren't necessarily the same thing as major invasion events.
📊 20. Event categories
For your Terraria reference guide, this organization is probably the cleanest:
