๐ Terraria NPCs: Complete Guide
1. What counts as an NPC?
Terraria has several categories:
- Town NPCs: permanent residents who can live in houses.
- Town pets: Cat, Dog, and Bunny.
- Traveling Merchant: temporary vendor.
- Skeleton Merchant: underground wandering vendor.
- Old Man: Dungeon NPC before Skeletron.
- Town Slimes: special cosmetic NPCs that can live in houses.
- Event-specific friendly NPCs and other temporary NPCs.
Most town NPCs need suitable housing to remain in your world. Each normal town NPC generally needs its own house. (Terraria Wiki)
๐ก 2. Housing
A valid NPC house needs the basic requirements:
- Enclosed space
- Player-placed background walls
- Entrance
- Light source
- Flat-surface furniture
- Comfort furniture
- Enough usable interior space
The Housing menu lets you:
- Check whether a room is valid
- Assign an NPC to a house
- Move NPCs around
Important
NPCs can die.
If a town NPC dies, they can generally respawn later as long as their requirements are still satisfied and suitable housing is available.
So don't panic when your Merchant gets obliterated by a Blood Moon. Terraria has apparently decided that employee turnover is part of the economy. ๐
๐งโ๐คโ๐ง 3. Towns
A town is created when enough friendly NPCs are concentrated together.
A town:
- Greatly reduces enemy spawning
- Uses the Town Day/Town Night music
- Provides a safe-ish base
- Can support pylons
The current rules consider NPCs within a 240 ร 135 tile area around the player when determining the town's inhabitants. Three NPCs are generally enough for a town, while a pylon only needs two qualifying housed NPCs nearby. (Terraria Wiki)
Town pets can also count toward pylon functionality and enemy suppression. (Terraria Wiki)
โค๏ธ 4. NPC Happiness
This is one of the most important NPC systems.
NPCs have preferences for:
Biomes
They may:
- โค๏ธ Love
- ๐ Dislike
- ๐ข Hate
Other NPCs
They can similarly:
- Love someone
- Like someone
- Dislike someone
- Hate someone
Their happiness affects vendor prices.
At maximum happiness:
- Purchases can be reduced to 75%
- Items you sell can be worth up to 133%
At minimum happiness:
- Purchases can reach 150%
- Items you sell can fall to about 67%. (Terraria Wiki)
It also affects things beyond ordinary shops, including:
- Nurse healing fees
- Goblin Tinkerer reforging costs
- Angler quest rewards
- Tax Collector income. (Terraria Wiki)
Important 1.4.5 change
The minimum happiness requirement for pylon purchases has been removed in Desktop 1.4.5.0.
So happiness is still useful for prices, but you no longer need to make your NPCs absurdly happy just to unlock a pylon. (Terraria Wiki)
๐บ๏ธ 5. NPC Preferences
Here are the important biome preferences you should know:
| NPC | Likes/Loves |
| --------------- | ---------------------------- |
| Guide | Forest |
| Merchant | Forest |
| Nurse | Hallow |
| Demolitionist | Underground |
| Dye Trader | Desert |
| Angler | Ocean |
| Zoologist | Forest |
| Golfer | Forest |
| Arms Dealer | Desert |
| Dryad | Jungle |
| Witch Doctor | Jungle |
| Painter | Jungle |
| Goblin Tinkerer | Cavern/Underground |
| Clothier | Underground |
| Mechanic | Snow |
| Party Girl | Hallow |
| Wizard | Hallow |
| Steampunker | Desert |
| Cyborg | Snow |
| Pirate | Ocean |
| Stylist | Ocean |
| Truffle | Glowing Mushroom |
| Tax Collector | Snow |
| Santa Claus | Snow |
| Princess | No specific biome preference |
Their relationships also matter. For example, the Guide likes the Clothier and dislikes the Painter, while the Merchant likes the Golfer and dislikes the Angler. (Terraria Wiki)
Don't obsess over perfect happiness unless you're optimizing prices. With the current 1.4.5 pylon changes, you have considerably more freedom.

โ๏ธ Snow
๐ 32. Princess
Requirement
Have essentially all other required town NPCs available, with the specific current NPC-count requirements satisfied.
Purpose
Sells a huge variety of decorative, vanity, and novelty items.
Happiness
The Princess is unusual because she has no biome preference. Her Bestiary portrait uses a Hallow background, but that does not mean she actually prefers the Hallow. (Terraria Wiki)
๐พ TOWN PETS
There are three:
๐ฑ Town Cat
Get a Cat License from the Zoologist.
The Cat License costs 5 gold. (Terraria Wiki)
๐ถ Town Dog
Get a Dog License from the Zoologist after filling 25% of the Bestiary.
The license costs 5 gold. (Terraria Wiki)
๐ฐ Town Bunny
Get a Bunny License after filling 45% of the Bestiary.
It also costs 5 gold. (Terraria Wiki)
Why pets matter
They're not merely decorative.
Town pets:
- Count toward pylon functionality
- Help with enemy spawn suppression
- Can share a house with a normal NPC
- Don't contribute to NPC crowding calculations
They cannot share a house with another town pet. (Terraria Wiki)
๐งณ SPECIAL NPCs
๐ Traveling Merchant
Unlike ordinary town NPCs, he doesn't permanently move in.
Requirements
At least 2 other qualifying NPCs must already be present.
He can randomly arrive between:
4:30 AM โ 12:00 PM
He leaves at:
6:00 PM
His inventory is randomized every visit, with roughly 4โ10 items available. (Terraria Wiki)
Important
He:
- Doesn't require a house
- Doesn't permanently stay
- Doesn't sell pylons
- Has a different inventory every visit
๐ Skeleton Merchant
Found randomly in the Underground/Cavern.
Unlike the Traveling Merchant, he is not a permanent town resident.
His inventory changes based on:
- Moon phase
- Time
- Other conditions
He sells various specialized utility items.
๐ง Old Man
Found at the Dungeon entrance.
Before Skeletron
He allows you to challenge Skeletron.
After Skeletron
He becomes the:
Clothier
So technically, the Clothier and Old Man are the same NPC entity at different stages of progression.
๐ฃ TOWN SLIMES
Terraria also has special Town Slimes.
They are essentially collectible slime NPCs that can live in houses and function as town residents.
Different Town Slimes are unlocked through different activities, exploration, and interactions.
They are primarily:
- Cosmetic
- Collection-oriented
- Useful as additional town inhabitants
They can also help with pylon requirements.
โก NPCs AND BOSS PROGRESSION

๐ฎ PYLONS
Pylons are arguably the biggest reason to care about NPC happiness.
Current Terraria has:
- ๐ณ Forest Pylon
- โ๏ธ Snow Pylon
- ๐๏ธ Desert Pylon
- ๐ณ๏ธ Cavern Pylon
- ๐ Ocean Pylon
- ๐ฟ Jungle Pylon
- ๐ Hallow Pylon
- ๐ Mushroom Pylon
- ๐ฅ Underworld Pylon
- โจ Aether Pylon
- ๐ Universal Pylon
The current 1.4.5 update added the Underworld and Aether Pylons. (Terraria Wiki)
Normal pylon requirements
A functioning pylon needs at least two qualifying housed NPCs within its required area.
The player also needs to be close enough to the pylon to use it. (Terraria Wiki)
Universal Pylon
The Universal Pylon is different:
- Works anywhere
- Doesn't require nearby NPCs
- Obtained through Shimmer rather than normal NPC purchasing
- Costs 1 Platinum when applicable to its purchase mechanics
Basically the final form of:
> "I am tired of building transportation infrastructure." ๐ญ
๐ง THE NPCS YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY REMEMBER
If you're studying this for actual Terraria knowledge, don't memorize every shop item. Memorize who unlocks what.
